What to Look for in Monogram Wedding Invitations

Custom monograms are a good way to make your wedding invitations stand out from a crowd of more traditional wedding invitation. A monogram wedding invitation – as the name implies – is one that showcases the initials of the Mister-and-Missus-to-be using some kind of ornamental font. His and Her initials can be paired as a foreshadowing of the union to come, or they can stand independently on either side of a central design. Monogrammed wedding invitations are particularly popular with young businesspeople whose professional identity is a source of pride.

When coupled with engraving, these stylish invitations never fail to impress, and the monogram can be repeated on other parts of the wedding stationery, as well as the menus, napkins and other wedding keepsakes.

The etiquette that has traditionally surrounded wedding invitations with monograms dictates that only the first initials of the bride and groom be used. This harkens back to a time when all brides automatically changed their name after marriage, and is not relevant for a couple in which the wife-to-be is planning to keep her own surname. If the bride is planning to change her name, however, the initials used on her monogrammed wedding invitations should not reflect her the married name she will assume.

Designing the monogram that ill go on your wedding invitation is a bit like designing a corporate logo – it takes some time, thought and graphic art skills. Don’t do this at home unless you’re very confident of your own illustration talents. Instead start looking through the many Internet catalogs available for ideas on which font will make you and your beloved’s initials look the most attractive. Then find a printer – either online or off – who will work with you to fine tune what you’ve seen. After your order is placed, make sure it’s received at least five months before your wedding is due to take place so you’ll have plenty of time to address and mail out your monogrammed wedding invitations.
