Uses of Ceramics

One may not think of ceramics are particularly durable, but this material is just that. They can survive great variances in temperature and severe weather. It is a strong, tough material that can possibly last a life time if cared for properly. Ceramics have a long history, going back possibly thirty thousand years. Yet new technology is taking advantage of this art form, using it in headphones, stereos, and other sound equipment to create resonance.

Another surprising place one can find ceramic technology is in cars. Many brake pads are now being made out of ceramic material as opposed to asbestos and steel. Ceramic pads offer many advantages. They have a longer life, and run in silence. They also can increase the life of the car tires, as compared to asbestos. It is also much safer to handle then asbestos material. Ball bearings are also being made out of ceramics, and for good reasons! These strong ceramic ball bearings are lighter than their steel counterparts but are actually tougher, as well as having a longer life. Friction is reduced, which makes the machine and/or wheel run faster. These innovations would never have been possible if it weren’t for ceramics.

Traditional uses of ceramics are still popular and have their presence in houses today. Walk into any kitchen, and most likely one will find plates, bowls, tea strainers, and other kitchen wares all made of this material. Outdoor use also favors ceramics, with garden stones, yard sculptures, and bird baths. Many artisans still use ceramics traditionally, making sculptures and other artistic creations.

Ceramics are not only used to decorate the home, but are also used as part of it. For example, ceramic tiles are very popular. They can almost always be found in bathrooms. They are tough enough to last, and offer beauty as well. Ceramic kitchen floor tiles are also popular, which again add beauty and durability to the home.

Humans have been using the material around them since the stone age to better their existence. The same can be said for today. Whether in stereo equipment, brake pads, ball bearings, tiles or home furnishings, this material has many uses.
