The Architectural Styles of the Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca stretches from above Denia and Javea in the North to just below Torrevieja in the south. There are some wonderful towns and villages due to visit including Rojales, Elche and Alcoy. And of course there are the wonderful white sandy beaches that the Costa Blanca is famous for. But there is also some wonderful sites both natural and architectural design are waiting to greet the hungry tourist.

The architecture in the Costa Blanca is really astonishing. The tourists will be mesmerized with how these monuments and buildings were built with different architectural styles such as Baroque, Renaissance, Gothic and Modernista, and how so many of them have been kept intact through all of Spain’s turbulent history.

Artesonado
The ceilings have intricate carvings and decorative designs which were introduced by Arabs. The architectural style of Artesonado leaves a great impression on tourists and locals.

Ayuntamiento (Town Hall), Xixona (Jijona)
One of the loveliest 20th century buildings with great facades covered in blue and gold tiles and painted griffons.

Azulejos
The tiles are well defined and the techniques used for decorative designs were introduced by Arabs.

Basílica de Santa María, Elx (Elche)
This monument was built between 1672 and 1783. This was made out of the remains of a mosque. The undulating façade of Basilica de Santa Maria is an excellent example of Baroque architecture.

Casa de El Piñón, La Unión
Murcian eclecticism can be seen in Casa de El Pinon. The attractive cupola was designed by Gustave Eiffel and the interior is embellished with ruddy decoration. After long years of neglect the building has finally been restored.

Casa Modernista, Jumilla
This building is considered to be the architectural gem of the early 20th century. It was designed by a follower of Gaudi and the ironwork is courtesy of the local craftsman Avelino Gomez.

Casa-Museo Modernista, Novelda
This elegant mansion still remains standing and well maintained. The original furniture is still kept inside the mansion.

Casino, Cartagena
This palace is also Baroque architecture. It was completely repaired at the end of the 19th century. Victor Beltri added a touch of artistry such as floral tiling, plasterwork and woodwork. Unfortunately this palace is already neglected.

Costa Blanca slowly unravels its beauty with these architectures. The Spanish architects incorporated art and history in a very fantastic way. The architectures in the Costa Blanca reveal the cultures and history that make the Costa Blanca a spectacular city.
