The problem with cheap office furniture however, is that the moving parts in the pieces often break. They may not break immediately but they tend to break much quicker than high quality furniture sold at specialty stores. File cabinet parts, office chair assemblies, desk drawers, and other moving parts are almost always the first to go, which is why you need to know how to fix these parts.

The first thing you need to know is that despite the fact that your simple white wood file cabinet or desk cost you a fraction of the high quality cabinet or desk from the specialty store the parts are just simple parts that anyone can buy at an online or local hardware store. If for instance you are a carpenter and are building these items you have to buy the sliders, rails, locks, and other parts somewhere, and when you need to repair a broken item these same stores can supply your needs in fixing your file cabinet or desk.

If you browse a hardware store either online or in person, note the parts available which are similar or identical to the parts that were originally used in your file cabinet. Locking mechanisms will fit better if they are the same size, drawer sliders and file drawer rails will install easier if they are the same length. Make sure to find parts that require less retrofitting or customization otherwise your repair projects will be more challenging.

When worse comes to worse however replacing your file cabinet or other piece of office furniture is still an option. Cheap office furniture can always be found easily. Buying inexpensive file cabinets in particular is probably an open invitation for future breakage so consider paying a little more money for a higher quality cabinet so you don’t need file cabinet parts down the road.. The higher value custom cabinets that many reputable furniture makers sell will be much more durable although they will cost you a good deal more.
