A couple times in my life I’ve found myself moving suddenly from one city to the next, and having to find a way to keep my furniture and a lot of my belongings in storage while I’m gone. And when that has happened, I’ve had to look for a good self storage facility to keep my things safe while I’m gone. For one, keep everything securely stored in boxes when you put them away. It’s unlikely, especially in the more modern facilities, to have mice, but it’s always a possibility, and you don’t want them to have easy access to the things you have stored.

If you’re going with a larger corporate storage company this isn’t as big a concern, but it still potentially could be. Boxes also make it easier for you to move things into the storage unit too. If you need a place to buy boxes, the company themselves probably sell them too.

If you need a vehicle to move your things, try asking the storage company. Oftentimes they will throw in a truck for a day to help you move in your things, or offer you heavily discounted rates. This can be easier for those of us who have cars that are not up to the task of moving everything we own in one load. It helps save a lot of stress. I personally use the company Mini U Storage, and they offer this service.

Finally, allow more time to move than you think it will take. Plan on two loads, even if you think it will only take one. You’re sure to hit some delays as the day goes on, and this way you’ll have some buffer time so you finish on time.

Overall, moving can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be horrible. Plan everything ahead of time, allow extra time, and things should go smoothly.
