Growing Basket Tomatoes For Maximum Yield
Hanging baskets aren’t just for plants and flowers any longer. Many have perfected how to plant vegetables in baskets with tomatoes being one of the most popular ones. A few good points to remember when planting tomatoes in baskets are being sure to pick a place in the yard that receives at least 6 hours of full sunlight as well as having a hanging basket, tomato plant, and sphagnum moss on hand. The sphagnum moss should be moist when placed into the basket. Be sure to position the tomato plant just below the crowns level.
One of the several advantages to growing tomatoes in a basket is the fact they do not require any staking or the use of tomato cages to support the plant.
To create your tomato hanging basket start with a small standard tomato or cherry tomato plant. Now select your basket. Fill the basket with a good growing medium. One of the best for tomatoes is sphagnum moss. Make the moss lightly damp by adding small amounts of water. Fill the basket about halfway with the moss. Set the tomato plant firmly in the basket and fill it with additional moist sphagnum. A good rule of thumb is one plant to one basket. Add a little liquid fertilizer. Water your plant frequently to ensure uniform moisture. Hang the basket in a sunny location, preferably where there is at least 6 hours of full sunlight. Sit back and be ready very shortly to harvest beautiful tomatoes.
Strawberries are another good garden fruit to be planted into baskets. Follow the same process as you did for the tomatoes. The only variation will be the difference in the plants needs for the type of soil and the kind of fertilizer. This information will be indicated on the tag included with the plant.
Flower planters also work great for small tomato seedlings. However, they should be transplanted into a larger pot after they reach several inches tall. If the tomato plants look frail and withered, try using some rich compost to give them vital nutrients and to retain moisture. Wormery compost is perfect for this task and can be made right at home.
